Oxfam Australia joins the rest of the world in mourning following the devastating tragedy and terrible loss of lives on board the Malaysia Airlines crash in the Ukraine.

The sadness deepens as we continue to receive news about the victims, including reports which suggest some of those killed in the crash were delegates travelling to the AIDS 2014 Conference to be held in Melbourne next week.

“We want to express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of those people who lost their lives on board this terrible crash,” Oxfam Chief Executive Helen Szoke said.

“We extend these sympathies as we mourn the loss of the large number of delegates who were travelling to attend the AIDS 2014 Conference. They were working to make the world a better place and the impact of this loss is profound.

“It is with shock and sadness we learn that many of those delegates were people that Oxfam worked in partnership with in the struggle against AIDS and they will not be forgotten.”
