7.7 earthquake rocks Afghanistan

Oxfam is ready to respond to the 7.7-strong earthquake that struck north-eastern Afghanistan just after 8pm this evening, in the remote province of Badakhshan.

It struck 82 km south-east of Feyzabad in the Hindu Kush mountain range.

The full extent of the damage is not yet known.

Oxfam has worked in Afghanistan for more than 30 years in areas such as disaster response, governance, livelihoods and women’s rights.

After years of conflict and natural disasters, Afghanistan remains one of the least developed countries in the world.
