Oxfam Trailwalker Perth will get underway this morning, with more than 1,200 participants taking on the challenge to walk or run up to 100km in the Perth Hills.
Considered one of Australia’s toughest endurance events, the event is hoping to raise $1.2 million for Oxfam to help people living in poverty around the world.
About 310 teams of four will take part in this year’s Oxfam Trailwalker Perth from 9 – 11 October with participants walking 100km or 50km. This is the third time the event has been held in Perth and the first time participants have the option to walk 50km.
Oxfam Trailwalker spokesperson Jez Hunghanfoo said everyone was excited that participants have the choice over which course to tackle, both of which come with unique challenges.
“It takes months of preparation, planning and dedication to get to this point and walkers will face a real physical and mental challenge over coming days,” Mr Hunghanfoo said.
“Helping all of our participants every step of the way will be our amazing volunteers and support teams who help make this event possible.
“Our teams put everything into the physical and fundraising aspects of this challenge and they help Oxfam to make a real difference in the world. They should be really proud of their efforts.”
Since 1999, more than 60,000 people have participated in the Australia-wide event, collectively raising more than $65 million for Oxfam Australia’s work helping communities around the world to fight poverty and injustice. In 2014, 305 teams took part in the Perth event and raised $1.2 million for Oxfam Australia.

Teams in the 100km event will set off in two starts at 7am and 8am this morning at Darlington. Teams have 48 hours to complete the event.
The 50km participants will start at 8am tomorrow at Chidlow and have 24 hours to complete the event.
The fastest teams are expected at the finish line at Ray Owen Reserve in Lesmurdie tonight, while the majority of teams from both events will cross the finish line from midday tomorrow onwards. The event finishes Sunday morning.
